Cambridge and Ipswich have been ranked among the best places in the UK to start a small business. A survey of 63 of the largest UK towns and cities ranked Cambridge in second place and Ipswich in eighth place as the locations where a small and medium sized business was most likely to succeed.

The study by Informi and released ahead of Small Business Saturday, looked at data from the last financial year and on criteria which included new business numbers, current business stock, pollution levels and digital connectivity. Ipswich, which rose 25 places since the previous survey, had the lowest pollution level of any town in the list along with high employment rates and digital connectivity.

Cambridge was ranked highly for its skilled workforce, high employment rate and digital connectivity.  – appearing in the top six in all three categories – and up three places on the 2018 study. Steven Drew of Informi said: “Small businesses are the heartbeats of local economies, bringing new jobs and prosperity to regions as well as attracting external investment.” He added that Cambridge and Ipswich had consistently shown they had a strong environment that is welcoming to entrepreneurs.
