Warning on Haven ports infrastructure

The competitive advantage of the Haven ports could be damaged if infrastructure improvements to support their expansion proves slow to materialise or is restricted, a debate between industry figures and local authority officers and councillors organised by the Haven Gateway Partnership heard this week. The need for better lorry-parking, improvements to the road and rail network and the creation of distribution centres was highlighted. The area’s ageing local workforce and growing competition from other port developments also came under the spotlight.

A report presented at the event highlighted that:

* Felixstowe handles 38 per cent of all container cargo in the UK, over twice as much as its nearest competitor

* Harwich International Port has 10 per cent of the UK cruise market

* The revenue generated by cruise passengers through Harwich generates approx 18m pa

* 12 per cent of all those employed, work in the ports and logistics sector

* The average ports and logistics annual wage is 29,000 - 4k higher than the sub-regional average

* 1,250 new and replacement ports and logistics jobs are required each year .
